IAF Extends Mirage-2000 ‘Vajra’ Service Life To 2038–2039
- The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to retain its Mirage-2000 ‘Vajra’ fighter fleet in frontline service until 2038-2039, extending the aircraft’s planned retirement date by roughly three to four years.
- The move is intended to prevent a capability gap as several next-generation combat aircraft programs continue to face delayed induction timelines.
- The extension reflects growing pressure on the IAF’s fighter force structure. The service currently operates approximately 31 fighter squadrons, significantly below its sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons, a shortfall that has become increasingly important amid evolving regional security requirements.
- A major factor behind the decision is the slower-than-expected arrival of replacement platforms. The indigenous Tejas Mk1A, Tejas Mk2 and AMCA programs are expected to play central roles in future force modernisation, but revised schedules have compelled the IAF to continue relying on proven legacy aircraft for a longer period.
- The service-life extension also helps counter the impact of the planned withdrawal of the SEPECAT Jaguar fleet. Around 115-120 Jaguars are expected to leave service between 2028 and 2031 as ageing engines, dwindling spare parts availability and increasing maintenance challenges make long-term operation progressively more difficult.
- By retaining the Mirage-2000, the IAF gains a dependable bridge capability during a critical transition period. The aircraft remains one of the force’s most respected multi-role platforms and continues to provide valuable air-defence and precision-strike capabilities.

- The acquisition was made under the Army’s emergency procurement route following extensive technical assessments and live operational trials. Four companies participated in the evaluation process, but SDAL was the only manufacturer to meet all required operational criteria.
- The induction comes as loitering munitions assume a growing role in modern warfare, providing commanders with a rapid-response precision-strike option while reducing risk to frontline personnel. Their importance has been underscored by recent operational experiences, including Operation Sindoor.
- The Nagastra-1R has been tailored specifically to meet the Indian Army’s short-range operational requirements. A key feature is its ability to conduct kamikaze-style attacks while retaining an abort-and-recovery capability, improving flexibility and reducing unnecessary losses of equipment.
- The delivery of 450 Nagastra-1R systems represents a significant milestone for India’s defence-industrial base and further strengthens the Army’s ability to conduct precise, intelligence-led strikes at short range while maintaining operational flexibility and cost efficiency.

L&T Begins Production of BVS-10 Sindhu ATVs
- Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in partnership with BAE Systems, has commenced production of the BvS10 Sindhu articulated all-terrain vehicle for the Indian Army, marking a significant step in enhancing the Army’s mobility and operational reach across some of India’s most challenging terrains.
- The Indian Army has placed an initial order for 18 BvS10 Sindhu vehicles. These platforms are slated for deployment in Ladakh and the Kutch region, where troops routinely operate in some of the harshest climatic and geographical conditions encountered anywhere in the world.
- In Ladakh, the vehicles will support military operations at altitudes of up to 18,000 feet. The region is characterised by rugged mountains, heavy snowfall and extreme winter conditions, with temperatures capable of falling to as low as minus 55 degrees Celsius.
- At the opposite end of the climatic spectrum, the vehicles will also serve along the Pakistan-facing frontier in the Kutch region. There, troops contend with scorching temperatures that can reach 55 degrees Celsius, as well as marshlands, desert terrain and the vast Great Rann of Kutch, where conventional military vehicles often face severe mobility limitations.
- The BvS10 Sindhu is an upgraded version of the globally proven BvS10 articulated all-terrain vehicle. The platform has been specially adapted to meet the Indian Army’s requirements across high-altitude, desert, marshland and amphibious operating environments.
- A key feature of the vehicle is its articulated mobility system, which enables it to traverse snow, ice, rocks, sand, mud, swamps and steep mountainous terrain.
- This capability allows troops and equipment to be transported into areas that are difficult or impossible to access using conventional wheels or tracked vehicles.
