Morocco is advancing its military modernization efforts through the acquisition of Chinese-made TB-001K “Scorpion” reconnaissance and attack drones. This move aligns with the North African nation’s objective to enhance its defense capabilities while simultaneously fostering stronger ties with Beijing.
The TB-001K, developed by Sichuan Tengden Sci-Tech Innovation Co., is characterized by its dual engines and a twin-tail design, which provide improved maneuverability compared to many other UAVs in the market. With an operational range of up to 6,000 kilometers (approximately 3,728 miles) and an endurance of up to 35 hours, the drone is designed for long-duration missions and extensive geographic coverage. Remarkably, it can carry a payload of up to 1,200 kilograms, enabling it to deploy a variety of light missiles and bombs that support diverse combat operations.
Details regarding the number of drones ordered, the total contract value, and the timeline for delivery have not been disclosed. However, the arrival of the Scorpion drones is anticipated to significantly augment Morocco’s strike capabilities, particularly in light of escalating regional security challenges.
Morocco’s military strategy involves sourcing equipment from various suppliers, reflecting a broad procurement philosophy. Currently ranked 59th in military strength by the Global Firepower Institute, Morocco has consistently leaned toward Chinese defense systems in its acquisitions. Notably, in 2022, the Royal Moroccan Army opted for the Wing Loong II medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV to fulfill its aerial surveillance and reconnaissance needs. Additionally, the Royal Moroccan Navy has strengthened its operational capabilities with the purchase of the HJ-9A anti-tank missile system, also known as Red Arrow 9A, which enhances its proficiency in targeting armored vehicles and fortified structures.
While its ties with China grow closer, Morocco is also diversifying its defense partnerships. Recently, the country took delivery of Bayraktar Akinci drones from Turkey, following an acquisition deal signed earlier in 2023. Furthermore, in 2022, Morocco secured 150 vertical takeoff and landing drones from Israel in a deal reportedly valued in the tens of millions of dollars, showcasing the nation’s commitment to elevating its military capabilities through a balanced portfolio of international defense relationships.
