Exercise Sea Dragon 2023

Sea Dragon is a multinational exercise led by the United States that aims to practice and discuss anti-submarine warfare tactics for use in response to traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. Sea Dragon 23 brought together Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) communities from the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Indian Navy (IN), Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN), and the United States Navy in its fifth year.

The two-week exercise, which began on March 15, was designed to provide advanced-level anti-submarine warfare (ASW) tactics training as well as successful integration and participation with US allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

Significance of Ex Sea Dragon

“Exercise Sea Dragon is a significant opportunity to work with and strengthen our strong multi-national relationships while sharing and honing complex warfighting skills,” said Rear Adm. Benjamin Nicholson, Commander of the Joint Region Marianas. “We are witnessing major geopolitical shifts in this region, and maintaining interoperability among our forces is more important than ever, as our competitors continue to test the limits of the international norms and the rule of law that we work to uphold.”

This year’s Sea Dragon Championship Belt was won by the JMSDF, who achieved high scores in simulated torpedo deployment speed and accuracy across four attacks on the target. CTF-72 personnel, along with representatives from the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Japan and Hawaii, conduct the grading to determine the winner. Additional prizes were given to the IN, ROKN, and VP-45 for other notable ASW performances during the competition.

The primary goal of Sea Dragon 23 was to demonstrate and practice high-competency advanced ASW integrated training alongside allied and partner nations committed to a team effort to maintain security in the Indo-Pacific region.
