Myanmar’s military has conducted a significant operation targeting a notorious internet scam center, resulting in the seizure of advanced satellite communication technology. The raid took place in KK Park, located near the Myanmar-Thai border, according to state media outlet The Global New Light of Myanmar. Authorities recovered 30 sets of Starlink receivers along with associated accessories during the operation.

In recent years, internet scam operations have proliferated across Myanmar, particularly in its lawless border regions, where these so-called “sweat shops” exploit unsuspecting individuals through various schemes, including fraudulent business and romance scams. These operations have thrived amid the ongoing turmoil within the country, which has been exacerbated by military conflict and political instability.

The crackdown on these illicit activities gained momentum this year following a coordinated effort by law enforcement agencies from Thailand, China, and Myanmar. This initiative aimed to dismantle the networks behind these scams and has reportedly led to the release of thousands of trafficked workers, many of whom found themselves entrapped in the harsh conditions of these compounds.

Despite these efforts, a recent investigation by AFP uncovered a surge in construction at various scam center locations, suggesting that the illegal operations are evolving rather than disappearing. Notably, the installation of Starlink technology—owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX—has been observed on the rooftops of these centers. This development highlights the escalating sophistication of the scam operations, which are now leveraging modern communication technologies to enhance their reach and effectiveness.

The military’s move to seize Starlink devices signifies an acknowledgment of the growing problem of internet fraud in the region and an attempt to regain control over the situation. However, the enduring presence of such operations raises pressing questions about the long-term effectiveness of current measures and the ongoing plight of workers caught in these exploitative environments. As Myanmar continues to grapple with the ramifications of its conflicts, the issue of internet scams remains a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities present in a fractured society.
