Naval Vessels Lürssen Initiates Sea Trials for Bulgaria's First Multipurpose Modular Patrol Vessel Hrabri

German shipbuilder Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL) has commenced sea trials for the first multipurpose modular patrol vessel (MMPV) designed for the Bulgarian Navy. The vessel, named Hrabri, which means “Brave” in Bulgarian, is currently undergoing evaluations in Varna Bay and designated areas of the Black Sea. These trials aim to assess its performance and systems in preparation for its anticipated commissioning by the end of 2025.

The construction of Hrabri began with a ceremonial steel-cutting ceremony in December 2021, followed by the keel laying in June 2022. This development took place in collaboration with the local partner MTG Dolphin in Varna. The vessel was officially undocked and launched in August 2023, marking its transition to the fitting-out phase.

Progress on the integration of weapons, systems, and sensors for Hrabri has been reported by the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence, indicating a focus on ensuring the vessel meets operational requirements.

The second vessel in the MMPV series, named Smeli (Courageous), is still under development. Once complete, it will join Hrabri in fulfilling the Bulgarian Navy’s mission to defend against a range of threats, including air, land, surface, and underwater risks. Both vessels will also support broader operations under NATO and EU allied missions.

The design of Bulgaria’s patrol vessels, based on NVL’s MMPV 90 model, spans 90 meters (295 feet) in length and has a beam of 14 meters (46 feet). Each ship is equipped to accommodate up to 70 personnel and features an arsenal that includes a 76-millimeter gun, a 35-millimeter close-in weapon system, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles, as well as torpedoes. The MMPV 90 also includes dedicated spaces for a maritime helicopter or a large unmanned aerial vehicle, alongside two rigid-hull inflatable boats.

In terms of performance, MMPV 90 is powered by two diesel engines, each producing approximately 8,900 horsepower, enabling a range of 3,000 nautical miles (5,556 kilometers or 3,452 miles) and speeds exceeding 20 knots (37 kilometers or 23 miles per hour). This capability will enhance Bulgaria’s maritime security and operational readiness in the Black Sea region.
