Netherlands Transfers Final Batch of F-16 Fighter Jets to Ukraine

The Netherlands has completed the transfer of its final batch of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, marking a significant step in bolstering Ukraine’s air capabilities amid ongoing hostilities. The last six of the 24 aircraft departed from Volkel Air Base in the southern Netherlands and arrived in Belgium, where they will receive final preparations before the official handover.

Once the aircraft are delivered, the Dutch government plans to continue its support for Ukraine’s air force by conducting combat readiness drills and offering pilot training at the European F-16 Training Centre located in Romania. Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans emphasized the strategic importance of the F-16s, highlighting their crucial role in defending against daily Russian air strikes. “F-16s are of vital importance for Ukraine due to the daily Russian air attacks. They allow us to keep Russian aggression at bay and away from us,” he stated.

The Netherlands initially delivered the first batch of F-16s in October 2024, with a subsequent batch sent in February. The country currently leads the F-16 Training Coalition, a collaboration involving 15 nations dedicated to training Ukrainian pilots and ground personnel on these advanced fighter jets.

This latest transfer comes at a critical time as Ukraine’s air forces have faced significant challenges in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the Ukrainian Air Force reported the loss of an F-16 due to an “emergency situation” while the pilot was engaged in defending against three Russian aerial threats. This incident marked the second loss of an F-16 for Ukraine; an earlier crash in 2024 during an anti-missile mission resulted in the death of its pilot.

To further support Ukraine’s fighter jet program, the Netherlands has committed resources for upgrades to ammunition, maintenance, and the provision of specialized tools. Last year, the Dutch government pledged substantial financial assistance, earmarking 80 million euros (approximately $89 million) for air-to-air missile support and 150 million euros (approximately $163 million) for air-to-ground munitions. This support includes equipping Ukraine’s aircraft with short- and medium-range missiles that can effectively counter incoming cruise missiles, enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in its ongoing conflict.
