In a significant development within India’s national security framework, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a member of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Delhi for alleged espionage activities involving Pakistan Intelligence Officers (PIOs). The accused, identified as Moti Ram Jat, was apprehended on May 21, 2025, following a comprehensive investigation that uncovered his involvement in sharing sensitive national security information since 2023.
This arrest comes in the context of tightened national security measures spurred by the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Official sources indicate that Jat was involved in transmitting classified data to intelligence operatives based in Pakistan and was receiving financial compensation via indirect methods. This incident underscores a troubling trend regarding insider threats within Indian security forces, amplifying concerns about potential vulnerabilities in operational protocols.
After his arrest, Jat was brought before a special court at Patiala House Courts, where Special Judge Chanderjit Singh remanded him to NIA custody until June 6, 2025. The judge remarked on the gravity of the charges, noting that Jat’s actions could have dire consequences for national security and the safety of Indian citizens and visitors alike.
Jat’s detention is part of a larger NIA initiative to dismantle espionage networks operating within the country. This operation implicated a variety of suspects, including a notable travel vlogger and an Indian Air Force corporal, as well as others linked to sensitive defense facilities such as Palam Air Force Base and the CGO Complex in Delhi.
The NIA is currently broadening its investigation to unveil the complete scope of the espionage activities, aiming to identify additional collaborators and assess the extent of the compromised information. Officials have reiterated that insider threats pose an escalating challenge to national security, particularly as Pakistan’s intelligence services increasingly attempt to target Indian defense personnel through tactics such as coercion, honeytraps, and cyber infiltration.
