Niger's Military Regime to Sell Nationalized Uranium on International Market

Niger’s military regime has taken a bold step in reshaping its economic landscape by announcing the sale of uranium produced by Somair, a uranium mining subsidiary previously operated by the French multinational Orano. This development was revealed on state television, Tele Sahel, with comments from General Abdourahamane Tiani, the head of the junta that came to power during a coup in 2023.

In his address, Tiani emphasized Niger’s “legitimate right to dispose of its natural riches,” asserting the nation’s independence in deciding how to handle its resources and engage in international trade. This declaration indicates a significant shift in the management of the country’s uranium resources, which are vital not only for Niger’s economy but also for the global nuclear energy market.

The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between the Nigerien junta and Orano, which is largely owned by the French government and has historically played a significant role in uranium mining within Niger. In 2024, Niger’s government removed Orano’s operational control over its major mining sites, including Somair, Cominak, and Imouraren, the latter of which is known for its extensive uranium deposits.

While Orano continues to hold a 60 percent stake in these subsidiaries, the company has initiated arbitration processes in an effort to regain control over its operations. The backdrop of this conflict reveals deeper geopolitical shifts, as Niger has begun distancing itself from France, accusing it of supporting separatist factions within the country, and pivoting towards Russia.

The Russian government has expressed interest in establishing its own uranium mining operations in Niger, an intriguing development given Russia’s status as a global nuclear power. This strategic alignment could suggest a reorientation of Niger’s foreign relations and economic partnerships, especially as it seeks assistance in combatting the jihadist insurgency that has plagued the region.

Niger’s importance in the uranium market cannot be understated; in 2022, it accounted for approximately 25% of the natural uranium supplied to European nuclear power plants, based on data from Euratom, the European atomic energy organization. As Niger enters this new phase of resource management and international engagement, the implications for both its domestic stability and its role in the global energy landscape remain to be seen.
