North Korea Denies US Cybercrime Accusations as "Absurd Slander"

On Sunday, North Korea rebuffed U.S. allegations concerning its involvement in cyber crimes aimed at generating illicit revenues, labeling the accusations as “absurd slander.” This response arises amidst claims from Washington that Pyongyang has escalated its cyber-warfare activities, allegedly resulting in the theft of billions in virtual assets. These cyber operations have reportedly transformed hacking into a significant source of foreign currency for North Korea, particularly in light of stringent sanctions imposed over its nuclear ambitions and weapons development.

In a statement issued through the official Korean Central News Agency, an unnamed spokesperson for the North Korean foreign ministry criticized the U.S. government for attempting to disseminate a “misleading understanding” regarding the nation’s cyber capabilities, characterizing the purported “cyber threat” as nonexistent. The statement emphasized that these charges are merely an effort to tarnish North Korea’s reputation through the propagation of falsehoods aimed at political ends.

Earlier in April, the U.S. Justice Department sentenced two individuals for facilitating North Korean access to remote IT employment with American firms, enabling the regime to generate millions of dollars through illicit means directed towards its weapons programs. The Justice Department detailed that over 100 U.S. companies were targeted in a prolonged scheme, which included several Fortune 500 entities and a defense contractor. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg noted that the ruse involved placing North Korean IT professionals on the payrolls of unwitting American firms, thereby posing risks to national security.

In April, cybersecurity analysts, including experts from Google, reported on an extensive attack linked to North Korean hackers that targeted a widely utilized but lesser-known software package. Additionally, a United Nations panel forecasted in 2024 that North Korean cyber operations have led to the theft of over $3 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017. The panel indicated that the illicit funds serve to fuel the development of weapons of mass destruction.

North Korea’s cyber warfare program has roots tracing back to at least the mid-1990s. Due to its extensive cyber theft activities, the country has been branded “the world’s most prolific cyber-thief” by various cybersecurity firms, underlining the ongoing global implications of its cyber operations.
