In a significant security review, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma visited Basantgarh in the Udhampur district to assess the current situation and counter-terrorism measures in an area that has recently seen increased militant activities.
During his visit, Gen Sharma engaged with senior field commanders who provided updates on the operational environment, specifically focusing on the nature of infiltration attempts originating from across the Line of Control (LoC) as well as the emerging threats posed by local terror networks.
The review emphasized the importance of strengthening the intelligence framework and enhancing coordination with local police and paramilitary forces. Discussions also highlighted the bolstering of the counter-infiltration grid in the area to mitigate potential risks.
While interacting with troops stationed for forward and counter-terrorism roles, Gen Sharma praised their professionalism and resilience in dealing with challenging operational conditions. He stressed the need for the highest levels of operational readiness, vigilance, and synergy among security agencies to effectively counter any attempts by hostile elements to disrupt peace.
Situated in the higher reaches of Udhampur, Basantgarh serves as a crucial corridor for militants moving between the Rajouri-Poonch area and South Kashmir. The region has witnessed a notable increase in militant encounters over the past year, prompting security forces to ramp up their operations significantly.
Gen Sharma reiterated the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering peace and security for local residents while maintaining relentless pressure on terrorist networks. He encouraged troops to remain proactive and adaptable to the evolving tactics used by adversaries, assuring them of comprehensive support from higher authorities in terms of resources and welfare.
