Overland AI Unveils Ultra: A Fully Autonomous Tactical Ground Vehicle for Versatile Military Missions

Seattle-based Overland AI has announced the launch of the Ultra, a fully autonomous tactical ground vehicle designed to operate in a variety of terrains and conditions, including GPS-denied environments. With a top speed of 35 miles per hour and the ability to carry a payload of up to 1,000 pounds, the Ultra is engineered for diverse missions such as reconnaissance, logistics support, counter-drone operations, and humanitarian aid.

The platform boasts a modular and attritable design, allowing it to be adapted for multiple roles. Its integration with local mesh networks, 5G technology, and satellite uplinks provides what the company describes as resilient, networked communications, which enhances operational reach and minimizes risks for military personnel. According to Greg Okopal, COO and co-founder of Overland AI, the Ultra offers commanders a rapidly deployable solution for various missions.

The introduction of the Ultra follows a significant development for Overland AI, as the company was awarded an $18.6 million contract by the U.S. Army and Defense Innovation Unit in 2024 as part of the Robotic Combat Vehicle Program. This Pentagon initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of warfighters by deploying unmanned systems as escorts or scouts.

Physically, the Ultra measures 155 inches in length, 72 inches in width, and 60 inches in height, with a gross weight of 3,500 pounds. Its compact size makes it agile and suitable for quick deployment in challenging environments. The vehicle features a cruising range of up to 100 miles, allowing it to complete extended missions without requiring frequent stops.

Engineered for versatility, the Ultra includes the OverDrive software stack, SPARK hardware infrastructure, and various modular payload options, such as uncrewed aerial systems and counter-UAS systems. With a ground clearance of 14.5 inches and a powerful 114-horsepower engine, the Ultra is capable of navigating difficult terrains, from dense forests to volcanic ridges. Byron Boots, CEO and co-founder of Overland AI, asserts that the vehicle empowers military personnel to operate effectively in crucial areas like the Indo-Pacific while keeping them out of harm’s way.
