Pakistan is grappling with a severe shortage of artillery ammunition, with estimates indicating that current stockpiles would only last for four days in the event of a high-intensity conflict. This alarming situation has been highlighted by sources from the New Delhi-based ANI news agency, which reported that recent arms exports to Ukraine and Israel have considerably depleted the country’s reserves. As a result, Pakistan’s military appears increasingly vulnerable, particularly following a sustained period of combat lasting just 96 hours.
The primary munitions manufacturer in Pakistan, the Pakistan Ordnance Factories, is reportedly struggling to meet demand due to outdated infrastructure and limited production capabilities. This critical issue was reportedly addressed during a Special Corps Commanders Conference held last week, where it became a focal point for the nation’s top military leaders. A defense analyst articulated the gravity of the situation, stating, “Pakistan sailed its ammunition to distant wars, only to find itself stranded, its arsenals empty, and its defenses teetering on the edge.” He further noted, “The pursuit of short-term economic gain has inflicted a long-term strategic wound.”
The urgency of this ammunition crisis is exacerbated by escalating tensions with India. Reports suggest that India may be considering a military response following a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists. The attack was attributed to militants based in Pakistan, further complicating the already strained relations between the two nations. In response, Islamabad claimed to possess credible intelligence indicating that India is preparing for an imminent military action as retaliation.
While Indian officials have not publicly confirmed or denied these allegations, sources indicate that the armed forces have been granted “operational freedom to decide the mode, targets, and timing” of any potential strikes. The Pakistan Army, which operates a variety of artillery systems, including M109 howitzers and BM-21 rocket launchers, would find it daunting to sustain a counteroffensive without sufficient ammunition reserves.
Reports from the Indian Defence Research Wing indicate that between February and March 2023, Pakistan exported tens of thousands of 122mm rockets and 155mm shells, further depleting their own stockpiles at a critical juncture. The situation casts a shadow over Pakistan’s military preparedness and raises significant concerns about its defensive capabilities amid rising regional tensions.
