On the fringes of the third Forum of India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the highest civilian distinction from two Pacific Island countries: Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
Highest Civilian Award to PM Narendra Modi
In honour of his worldwide leadership, Fiji bestowed the highest distinction on PM Modi: Companion of the Order of Fiji. Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka bestowed the highest distinction in the country to PM Modi, which is only bestowed on a few non-Fijians. PM Modi was also awarded the Companion of the Order of Logohu by Papua New Guinea for promoting the cause of Pacific Island unification and driving the cause of the Global South. This prize has only been given to a few non-Papua New Guineans.
President Surangel Whipps Jr bestowed the “Ebakl Award” on PM Modi on the margins of the third India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit in Papua New Guinea. The Prime Minister arrived in Papua New Guinea on Sunday after attending the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. Modi will go to Sydney after his visit to Papua New Guinea, at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
This is not the first time PM Modi has received foreign honours.
In 2016, Saudi Arabia bestowed the Order of Abdulaziz Al Saud on Prime Minister Modi, the highest distinction bestowed by Saudi Arabia on non-Muslim dignitaries. In the same year, he won Afghanistan’s highest civilian honour, the “State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan.” PM Modi was awarded the “Grand Collar of the State of Palestine Award” in 2018, which is presented to foreign dignitaries. The UAE bestowed the highest civilian distinction to PM Modi the following year, the Order of Zayed Award. In the same year, he was awarded the Order of St. Andrew, Russia’s highest civilian distinction.
In 2019, he was also granted the “Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddin,” the Maldives’ highest accolade bestowed on foreign dignitaries, as well as the Bahrain Order of the Renaissance, the first class of which is a top honour bestowed by the gulf country. Next year, the US government bestowed upon PM Modi the “Legion of Merit,” an award presented by America’s Armed Forces for extremely meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. Bhutan, too, bestowed the highest civilian medal, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, on PM Modi in December 2021.
