In a significant development aimed at enhancing India’s defence capabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navdurga Testing Range in Nagayalanka, Andhra Pradesh. This state-of-the-art missile testing facility, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is set to play a crucial role in advancing India’s tactical missile systems, particularly focusing on surface-to-air missiles and anti-tank missiles.
During his address at the inauguration, PM Modi drew a symbolic parallel between the newly established facility and Maa Durga, the Hindu goddess known for her strength and protective nature. He stated, “Just as Maa Durga symbolizes empowerment, the Navdurga Testing Range will empower our nation’s defence strength.” His remarks emphasized the facility’s significance in bolstering India’s military capabilities.
The Prime Minister took the opportunity to commend both the scientific community and the residents of Andhra Pradesh for their contributions to the nation’s defence and space sectors. He highlighted the state’s historic role in establishing India as a formidable space power and reiterated that the inauguration of this facility would greatly enhance the country’s defence infrastructure.
Beyond the defence sector, PM Modi’s visit included the inauguration and foundation-laying for infrastructure projects worth ₹58,000 crore, which encompass essential initiatives such as roads, railways, and the Polavaram Project. He assured that the central government would remain committed to completing the Polavaram Project, aimed at improving water access for farmers, especially in rural contexts.
In discussing infrastructure development, PM Modi emphasized its extensive benefits, pointing out positive impacts on industries such as cement, steel, and transportation. He also noted the generation of new employment opportunities for the youth, highlighting projects like the upcoming Ekta Mall in Visakhapatnam, which supports the ‘Make in India’ mission and the ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative.
The Navdurga Testing Range, which gained approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security in October 2024, marks a pivotal leap forward in India’s defence technology efforts. The facility is expected to facilitate the testing of a variety of missile systems, including Very Short Range Air Defence Systems and man-portable anti-tank guided missiles, further empowering the Indian armed forces and enhancing the nation’s military readiness.
