Poland’s military modernization plan gained significant momentum with the recent arrival of two additional AH-64D Apache attack helicopters from the United States. Defense Minister WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the aircraft have arrived at the 1st Army Aviation Brigade, located in InowrocÅ‚aw. He also noted that the final two helicopters of the leased fleet are expected to join them by the end of the year.
These eight leased Apache helicopters are part of a strategic interim agreement with the U.S. that allows Polish pilots and maintenance crews to undergo training in preparation for the future deployment of the new AH-64E Guardian variant. This transaction is a component of Poland’s wider defense modernization efforts as it seeks to enhance its military capabilities.
As part of this comprehensive training initiative, the helicopters are being integrated into programs designed to equip Poland’s Army Aviation units for full-scale operations. The training aims to ensure that troops are well-prepared for comprehensive missions when the newly constructed Apaches begin to arrive in the coming years.
Poland’s acquisition of Apache helicopters reflects its broader defense procurement strategy, which has bolstered military cooperation with the United States. In a significant step, Krakow finalized a sizable $10-billion deal in August 2024 for 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters, marking the largest order of its kind ever placed by a European nation. Deliveries for these advanced helicopters are anticipated to begin in 2026, with Boeing overseeing the production, along with Polish industry partners responsible for logistics and maintenance support.
Further reinforcing its defense capabilities, the Polish Armed Forces have also received several M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks from the U.S. in 2025. In addition, Poland is actively integrating HIMARS rocket artillery systems under multiple contracts valued in the billions, enhancing its firepower in strategic military operations.
To further strengthen its air defense network against potential regional threats, Poland has signed a $2-billion agreement with the United States for Patriot missile systems in April 2025. This decision underscores Poland’s commitment to improving its defense infrastructure and ensuring that it remains equipped to address contemporary security challenges.
