Poland Signs $4.8 Billion Deal with Sweden for Three Saab Submarines Amid Rising Russian Threat

Poland has taken a significant step in bolstering its maritime defense capabilities by signing a $4.8 billion contract with Sweden for the purchase of three state-of-the-art submarines. The agreement was finalized on Monday in the Polish Baltic port city of Gdynia, amid growing concerns over security in the region, particularly due to heightened tensions with Russia.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the importance of this procurement, stating that the country is acquiring three A-26 type, fifth-generation submarines, recognized as the most modern available. He elaborated that these submarines are specifically designed for operations in the Baltic Sea and will enhance the capabilities of both the Polish navy and special forces.

The contract was signed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and includes an extensive armaments package along with a training and support program. The total value of the deal is approximately 47 billion Swedish kronor. Deliveries are scheduled to commence with the first submarine expected in 2031 and the last one anticipated by 2038.

In preparation for these new assets, Sweden has agreed to lend Poland a modernized A-17 type vessel to be operational by next year, which will facilitate training for Polish sailors.

This submarine procurement initiative, known as Orka (Orca), is characterized as one of the Polish navy’s most urgent projects. Currently, Poland operates only one outdated submarine, a relic from the Soviet era that dates back to 1985. The new submarines are expected to revolutionize Poland’s underwater capabilities.

In addition to the subs, the agreement encompasses various components such as industrial exchanges, logistics support, operational aid, and infrastructure development. Notably, it also involves Sweden acquiring a rescue vessel constructed in Polish shipyards.

Prime Minister Kristersson called the contract a “historic milestone” for both nations, projecting that it will generate approximately 7,000 jobs in Poland and a substantial number in Sweden. The selection of Saab as the supplier marks a definitive choice, as Poland had previously evaluated bids from other nations including Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, and the French company Naval Group.
