Power and Duty of a Subedar Major [SM Saab]

Despite being junior to a commissioned officer such as a lieutenant, the position of subedar major (SM) is important in the Indian Army. SMs have extensive experience and are referred to respectfully as SM Sahab. They can command either a single unit or a headquarters with men under their command. SMs are frequently conferred with honorary ranks such as Honorary Lieutenant and Honorary Captain in appreciation of their extraordinary service record.

It is noteworthy that subedar majors and other Junior Commissioned Officers in the Indian Army are considered equivalent to Group-B gazetted officers in India.

Duties of a Subedar Major

Leadership and Discipline: The Subedar Major is in charge of preserving the unit’s discipline, order, and morale. They serve as role models and mentors for junior non-commissioned officers and soldiers.

Administrative Duties: The Subedar Major aids the commanding commander with unit administration. They are responsible for personnel administration, which includes promotions, postings, leaves, and the welfare of soldiers under their command.

Training and Development: The Subedar Major is in charge of troop training and development. They aid in the organisation of training programmes, ensuring that soldiers are well-prepared for operational missions, and upholding unit standards.

Communication and Liaison: The Subedar Major serves as a liaison between commanders and soldiers, relaying instructions, commands, and information from officers to the infantry. They also express the soldiers’ issues and grievances to higher command, enabling effective communication and coordination.

Ceremonial and Protocol Duties: The Subedar Major is responsible for ensuring that ceremonial and protocol events are carried out with accuracy and in accordance with military traditions. They may be in charge of parades, guards of honour, and other ceremonial events.

Welfare and Morale: The Subedar Major is responsible for the troops’ welfare and well-being, addressing their complaints and ensuring their demands are satisfied. They serve as a link between the troops and the unit’s leadership, creating a pleasant atmosphere and increasing morale.

Command and Control: In the absence of higher-ranking commanders, the Subedar Major may take temporary leadership of the unit. They maintain operational preparedness, and cohesion, and make tactical judgements as needed.
