In a prestigious ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Shaurya Chakra upon Subedar Vikas Tomar of the 1 Para Special Forces, recognizing his extraordinary bravery and leadership during a high-risk counter-terrorism operation in the Dhagri Forest on September 11, 2024.
The operation unfolded over 120 intense hours, where Subedar Tomar showcased exceptional tactical acumen while leading his team through perilous combat conditions. His effective engagement and neutralization of terrorist threats not only exemplified his combat skills but also underscored his commitment to ensuring the safety of his personnel. During the operation, he played a crucial role in evacuating injured team members despite enduring heavy enemy fire, which notably thwarted a significant terror plot. Such acts of valor and sacrifice earned him commendation as reflected in the official citation.
The Shaurya Chakra, established in 1952 and rebranded in 1967, stands as India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. It recognizes both military and civilian individuals for their acts of bravery and selflessness in situations not directly involving combat with adversaries.
Subedar Tomar is affiliated with the elite 1 Para Special Forces unit of the Indian Army, a battalion famous for its specialization in counter-insurgency, anti-terrorism operations, and high-risk reconnaissance missions. The successful Dhagri operation further reaffirms the vital role played by the Para SF in safeguarding national security.
During the ceremony, President Murmu praised Tomar’s indomitable spirit, noting that his exemplary actions serve as a beacon of inspiration for the nation. The event witnessed attendance from senior military officials, fellow awardees, and the families of the honored individuals, marking a proud moment for both the armed forces and the country.
In his acceptance speech, Subedar Tomar dedicated his award to his unit and family, with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the unwavering support from his mother, Shrimati Onkar Devi, and father, Shri Sanjay Singh. This recognition not only honors his personal achievements but also contributes to the distinguished legacy of the Para Special Forces, regarded as India’s most elite and fearless warriors since their inception in 1966.
