Rafael and Elbit Systems Develop Integrated Maritime Electronic Warfare Suite for NATO Frigates

In a significant development for naval defense technology, Israeli defense companies Rafael and Elbit Systems have announced a collaboration to create an integrated maritime electronic warfare (EW) self-protection suite specifically tailored for the frigates of NATO European member states. This advanced solution will leverage Elbit’s DESEAVER MK-4 Naval Decoy Control & Launching System (DCLS), complemented by Rafael’s innovative decoy countermeasures.

The integrated system aims to provide frigates with an enhanced capability to deploy a range of decoy rounds, designed to mislead, confuse, or distract incoming enemy weapons and their targeting systems. This enhancement is crucial for improving soft-kill defense measures, which are essential for ensuring the safety and operational effectiveness of naval vessels in combat.

Elbit and Rafael have noted that the new maritime EW solution will incorporate trainable and stabilized launchers, which will facilitate the rapid and precise deployment of decoys when under threat. According to the firms, the transition from traditional fixed Decoy Launching Systems (DLS) to the sophisticated DESEAVER MK-4 marks a significant step forward. This upgraded system combines both passive and active countermeasures, significantly increasing a vessel’s resilience in contemporary combat situations.

While the companies have not disclosed which specific NATO European countries will receive this advanced EW suite, they confirmed that the deployment will benefit five vessels. This is part of a broader initiative to enhance naval operational capabilities among allied forces.

The DESEAVER MK-4 is designed to address complex missile threats while ensuring high situational awareness in challenging maritime conditions. Rafael’s decoy systems, including BEAM TRAP, SMOKE TRAP, and WIZARD, are meticulously engineered to neutralize sophisticated anti-ship missile seekers. Together, these technologies will provide a robust defense against a wide array of naval threats.

Tzvi Marmor, executive vice president at Rafael, expressed pride in the partnership and emphasized the commitment of both companies to deliver advanced, battle-tested electronic warfare solutions. He stated that securing this contract underscores the trust placed in them and highlights their ongoing commitment to enhancing naval operational capabilities.

The implementation of this contract is scheduled to unfold over the next four years, marking a strategic advancement in maritime defense systems for NATO members.
