Rajasthan Intelligence has taken significant action by arresting a resident of Jaisalmer, Pathan Khan, on espionage charges related to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). This development comes after a thorough month-long investigation, initiated when Khan was detained in early April on suspicions of engaging in intelligence activities that could threaten India’s national security.
According to statements from officials, Khan’s troubling activities date back to his first trip to Pakistan in 2013, where he allegedly established connections with ISI operatives. During this initial visit, he was said to have been offered financial incentives and trained in basic espionage tactics. Following this, Khan reportedly maintained regular communication with his Pakistani contacts, transferring sensitive information concerning Indian military operations and deployments near the strategic Jaisalmer International Border.
The region’s proximity to Pakistan makes it a frequent target for espionage efforts. Investigations revealed that Khan used intermediaries to relay classified data, receiving payments from the ISI in return. Following a series of surveillance operations, Rajasthan Intelligence identified suspicious patterns in Khan’s movements, culminating in his arrest under the Official Secrets Act, 1923.
This incident is part of a broader trend of espionage activities in Rajasthan’s border districts. Last year, three other individuals faced similar charges related to spying for Pakistan. Authorities believe that the ISI exploits vulnerable local populations in border regions for intelligence-gathering operations, raising concerns about national security.
In response to these developments, the Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened security measures, particularly through the E-Pass system managing public access for tourism around the Tanot Mata Temple. Officials stressed the importance of increased vigilance, particularly in areas with military significance.
Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full extent of Khan’s alleged espionage network and identify any potential collaborators. Rajasthan Intelligence officials have reiterated their commitment to protecting national security and have called upon citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities.
