Reliance Defence Partners with Coastal Mechanics to Enhance India's Defence MRO Capabilities

Reliance Defence Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, has announced a strategic partnership with US-based Coastal Mechanics Inc. aimed at accessing India’s burgeoning ₹20,000 crore defence maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market. This collaboration seeks to deliver comprehensive lifecycle support and upgrade services for crucial Indian military platforms, which include fighter jets, helicopters, and air defence systems.

The partnership, unveiled on Monday, is viewed as a pivotal step in enhancing the defense support ecosystem in India. Coastal Mechanics Inc., recognized as an authorized contractor for the US Department of Defense, brings substantial expertise and resources to the endeavor. The joint initiative will focus on the sustainability and modernisation of various platforms, including the Jaguar and MiG-29 fighter aircraft, Apache helicopters, and L-70 air defense guns, which are currently operational within the Indian Armed Forces.

As part of this agreement, the two companies plan to establish a joint venture at the MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) facility in Maharashtra. This hub will provide MRO and upgrade services not only for domestic military needs but also for potential export opportunities. The firms emphasized that this facility is set to evolve into a long-term centre of excellence, aimed at extending the operational lifespan of existing military assets.

The new venture aligns well with India’s strategic shift towards performance-based logistics and lifecycle extension strategies, moving away from the traditional approach of frequent platform replacements. This initiative is anticipated to bolster readiness and enhance cost-efficiency across critical components of India’s defense infrastructure. Through this partnership, Reliance Defence and Coastal Mechanics Inc. aim to create a robust support system that will significantly contribute to the modernization of the Indian military.
