French automaker Renault is exploring the possibility of establishing drone manufacturing operations in Ukraine, following an invitation from the Ukrainian defense ministry. A spokesperson for Renault confirmed that discussions are ongoing, but no final decision has been made pending further details from the ministry.
This potential initiative was highlighted by the broadcaster Franceinfo, which reported that Renault is poised to set up production lines located “dozens or hundreds of kilometers from the front line.” The report underscores the strategic significance of drones in Ukraine’s current military operations, especially against the backdrop of ongoing conflict with Russian forces. Notably, on June 1, Ukrainian forces utilized over 100 drones in a significant strike against Russian military aircraft, an operation dubbed “Spider’s Web.”
Just two days prior to Renault’s announcement, French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu revealed that a major French automotive company would collaborate with a French defense manufacturer to establish drone production capabilities in Ukraine. Lecornu emphasized that these drones would not only serve the Ukrainian military but would also help the French armed forces gain invaluable practical experience in real combat situations.
Moreover, Lecornu noted that Ukraine has become adept at employing and advancing drone technology, demonstrating a higher level of expertise than the French military in this domain.
The French government, which maintains a 15 percent ownership stake in Renault, is keen to support Ukraine amid ongoing hostilities and recognizes the potential advantages of developing a drone manufacturing hub within the country.
