Republic of Korea Navy Chooses Rolls-Royce for Ulsan-Class Frigate Propulsion Systems

In a significant move to enhance its naval capabilities, the Republic of Korea Navy has partnered with Rolls-Royce to supply advanced propulsion systems for its Ulsan-class frigates. This agreement involves the integration of the MT30 marine gas turbine, along with associated controllable pitch propellers and diesel generator sets, all proven technologies from the London-based aerospace and defense company.

The deal is part of a broader initiative supported by Seoul’s $3-billion investment plan unveiled in 2021, which includes the construction of six next-generation Ulsan warships. The first two vessels will be assembled by South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean, marking a crucial step in the modernization of the country’s naval fleet.

The propulsion system will feature a four-set diesel generator, designed to power the electric motors of the Ulsan frigates, which are being developed in collaboration with the Korean defense contractor STX-Engines. This hybrid system will allow the frigates to utilize electric motors at cruising speeds, while the gas turbine will take over during high-speed operations, optimizing performance across a range of maritime scenarios.

Rolls-Royce has emphasized that this collaboration builds on its successful history with the Republic of Korea Navy, including the installation of MT30 technology in the country’s eight Daegu-class guided-missile frigates and six Chungnam-class anti-submarine warfare frigates. Jongyel Lee, representing Rolls-Royce’s Business Development & Future Programs, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the advanced power and propulsion capabilities that will be provided. Lee further noted that this collaboration will enable the Republic of Korea Navy to maintain a technological edge, minimizing the need for costly upgrades to outdated power generation systems throughout the lifespan of the new vessels.

This partnership not only underscores the strengthening ties between Korea and Rolls-Royce but also highlights the ongoing commitment of both parties to advance naval technology and enhance defense capabilities in the region.
