Vellore, Tamil Nadu (October 25, 2026): A 52-year-old retired Indian Army officer, identified as Babu, has been arrested after allegations that he shared confidential military information and details about Army equipment with an unidentified woman on WhatsApp. The case was taken up by the Vellore Rural Police after central intelligence agencies handed him over.
Babu is a native of Keezhvallam village near Kaniyambadi in Vellore district. He served in the Indian Army for 28 years across various divisions and retired in 2025 with the rank of Captain from the Army’s equipment division before returning to his native village.
How the alleged contact began
According to preliminary investigations cited by Kaniyambadi police and reports based on ANI inputs, the woman is believed to have first contacted Babu on WhatsApp about a year ago. Investigators suspect that the conversations began with inappropriate messages and then shifted to requests for information related to the Indian Army and its equipment. Babu is alleged to have shared the requested details over the past year.
Police also suspect that when he did not already have certain information, he reportedly called Army offices to obtain it and then forwarded the details to the woman. Army officials later became suspicious of his activities and questioned him in person with assistance from central intelligence agencies. The inquiry reportedly pointed to repeated communication of military-related details over the preceding year.
Investigation and next steps
Central intelligence officials detained Babu for questioning on October 23, 2026, and handed him over to the Vellore Rural Police Station on the night of October 24. The Vellore Rural Police have registered a case and are continuing further investigation.
Investigators are now trying to identify the woman, find out who operated the WhatsApp account, and determine whether any foreign nationals or overseas organisations were involved in the suspected leak. They are also examining the possibility of a honeytrap operation, although that has not been confirmed.
No specific details of the alleged information have been made public so far. The matter remains under investigation, and the allegations have not been established as facts at this stage.
