In a significant move against corruption, the vigilance department of Uttarakhand has apprehended a retired army Colonel, who was serving as the District Sainik Welfare Officer in Bageshwar district, on charges of accepting a bribe of ₹50,000. The allegations stem from claims that the officer demanded this amount in exchange for facilitating service extension-related processes, according to officials.
The case gained traction following a complaint made via the state’s toll-free hotline, 1064, where concerns were raised about the officer’s illegal request for bribes to expedite necessary paperwork at the District Sainik Welfare Department. In response to the complaint, the vigilance team promptly launched an investigation and set up a trap. On May 24, they successfully caught the officer in the act of accepting the bribe.
Officials confirmed that the retired Colonel, who resides in Rampur village in Tehsil Kapkot, has been booked under pertinent sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The vigilance department has also initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the incidents surrounding this case. This arrest highlights the state government’s determination to ensure transparency and eradicate corrupt practices within its official frameworks.
A recent government statement emphasized that this incident aligns with a wider initiative against corruption, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
