Rheinmetall, the defense contractor renowned for its innovative military technologies, is embarking on an ambitious expansion of its Skyranger air defense system production to meet surging global demand. Currently manufactured at Rheinmetall Air Defence facilities in Switzerland, the production capacity has proven inadequate given the increasing orders from several nations.
Germany is at the forefront of this demand, preparing a significant multi-billion-euro procurement for several hundred Skyranger systems, supplementing an earlier contract for 19 units. Other countries are also making substantial commitments: Austria has ordered 36 systems, Denmark is set to acquire 16, and the Netherlands is looking to add 22 units to its arsenal.
To accommodate the rising production requirements, Rheinmetall plans to establish additional manufacturing sites in Hungary and Italy, alongside its existing facility in Neuss, Germany. The first deployment of the Skyranger system for Germany is anticipated between late 2027 and 2028.
The Skyranger system is notably characterized by its modular turret, which integrates a sophisticated suite of sensors along with a 30mm Revolver cannon paired with guided missile systems, such as the Mistral. In a strategic enhancement, Germany has engaged MBDA to equip the Skyranger with the DefendAir anti-drone missile, specially designed to target unmanned aerial systems in the lighter class, weighing up to 150 kilograms (331 pounds).
The DefendAir missile boasts an engagement range of up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles), with each launcher capable of holding between 9 to 12 missiles, depending on its configuration. Additionally, the advanced 30mm cannon can fire at an impressive rate of 1,250 rounds per minute, with an effective range of approximately 3 kilometers (1.86 miles). Its capability is further elevated by the use of programmable airburst rounds that disperse tungsten fragments, eliminating the necessity for direct hits.
The Skyranger system also features an advanced command system that creates a localized air picture, facilitating rapid threat assessment and response. Its design incorporates the latest battlefield dynamics, enabling it to effectively counter a diverse range of aerial threats, including drones, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and loitering munitions.
With the combined firepower of the 30mm cannon and missile capabilities, a single Skyranger unit is reported to be capable of neutralizing up to 30 drones in one engagement, showcasing its formidable effectiveness in modern military operations. As nations bolster their defense strategies in response to emerging threats, the development and expansion of the Skyranger system are poised to play a crucial role in global air defense initiatives.
