Romania has finalized a significant defense procurement deal valued at 625 million euros ($724 million) to enhance its military capabilities through the acquisition of Mistral very short-range air defense systems from France. The comprehensive contract includes 231 Mistral man-portable air defense systems, 934 Mistral missiles, extensive training services, ammunition, documentation, a simulator, and full logistical support.
This strategic purchase is aimed at bolstering the defense capabilities of Romania’s Land, Air, and Naval Forces, as well as its Special Operations Forces. The deal was previously approved by the Romanian Parliament in June 2022 and forms a key part of the Security Action for Europe program, which is an EU initiative focused on strengthening the European defense industry through collaborative public procurement efforts.
According to a statement from the Romanian defense ministry, this acquisition is part of the European Joint Acquisition of the Mistral System initiative, which is coordinated by France and includes participation from other European countries such as Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, and Hungary.
The Mistral system is developed by MBDA and serves as a multi-platform, fire-and-forget solution designed to safeguard troops, strategic targets, and military vehicles against various aerial threats, including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), cruise missiles, and hostile surface vessels. The latest model, the Mistral 3, boasts impressive specifications, with an interception range of up to 8,000 meters (approximately 26,247 feet) and the ability to engage targets as high as 6,000 meters (around 19,685 feet).
This missile system is distinguished by its high maneuverability, capable of achieving supersonic speeds, and has recently demonstrated its effectiveness in trials against both surface ships and low-observable drones, marking a significant advancement in Romania’s defense technology and operational readiness.
