Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the commencement of the exchange via social media, offering a glimpse of the returned soldiers wrapped in Ukrainian flags, celebrating their homecoming. He highlighted that the initial group included wounded troops, severely injured members, and individuals under the age of 25. Despite the successful swap, neither Kyiv nor Moscow disclosed the exact number of exchanged prisoners, although earlier reports indicated that the negotiations could potentially involve over 1,000 captured soldiers, positioning this as the largest exchange seen in the ongoing war.
The weekend had been rife with tension as both sides accused each other of delay tactics that could derail the agreed exchange. Zelensky charged Russia with engaging in what he described as a “dirty, political game,” citing Moscow’s failure to adhere to the terms stipulated, which included releasing soldiers who were sick or wounded, and those under 25 years old. In response, Russian authorities claimed that Kyiv was obstructing the return of the bodies of 1,200 soldiers, reportedly stored in refrigerated trucks near the border.
