Russia Tests Nuclear-Capable Underwater Drone Amid US Tensions

Russia has successfully conducted a test of its nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, as announced by President Vladimir Putin. This marks the country’s second test of a new nuclear weapons system in a matter of days, defying warnings from US President Donald Trump.

The test of the underwater drone, known as “Poseidon,” follows a previous demonstration of the Burevestnik cruise missile, which Putin claimed possesses an “unlimited range.” Trump criticized the missile test as inappropriate, calling for Putin to redirect his efforts toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In his remarks while visiting a military hospital treating wounded soldiers, Putin detailed the capabilities of the Poseidon, stating that it is an unmanned underwater device equipped with a nuclear power unit. He emphasized that the drone has the ability to evade interception, can travel faster than conventional submarines, and reach any continent.

According to Russian military sources, Poseidon can operate at depths exceeding one kilometer and attain speeds of up to 70 knots while remaining undetectable. The drone is designed to carry a nuclear warhead of up to two megatons, a feature that underscores its strategic potential. The Poseidon was first tested in 2018, alongside the announcement of both the Burevestnik and Poseidon systems during a significant anti-Western speech by Putin.

The ongoing tension between the US and Russia has escalated, particularly with Trump expressing frustration over the lack of progress in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. He criticized Russia’s missile tests as detracting from more critical issues, stating that the conflict should have concluded rapidly, yet it extends into its fourth year.

In response to the stalemate in talks, the US recently imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, aiming to apply pressure on Moscow. Trump has made concerted efforts to secure an agreement since returning to the White House in January, but his attempts have encountered roadblocks, with Putin rejecting multiple ceasefire proposals.
