A recent Russian attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left several others injured, according to local authorities. Oleg Synegubov, the regional governor, confirmed the tragic details in a post on Telegram, noting that the assault occurred on the outskirts of the city.
In addition to the fatalities, at least six people were reported wounded during the overnight strike. Emergency workers, equipped with white helmets, were photographed navigating through the debris of a building that housed the postal service company Nova Poshta. The regional prosecutor’s office released a video depicting the ongoing recovery efforts amidst the still-smoldering wreckage.
The violence in Kharkiv extended to other areas as well, with the city’s mayor, Igor Terekhov, reporting that a Russian long-range drone struck a medical facility designated for children. Fortunately, this attack did not result in any casualties, though it caused significant damage and a subsequent fire.
Further attacks occurred in the southern city of Odessa, where multiple residential buildings, a hospital, and a kindergarten were damaged. Regional governor Sergiy Lysak indicated that these strikes occurred in two separate waves, resulting in at least five additional injuries.
The recent escalation is part of a broader pattern, as Moscow has been relentlessly targeting Ukraine with drone and missile attacks in recent months, primarily aimed at energy infrastructure during the harsh winter weather. This aggressive strategy has severely disrupted power supplies across the nation.
The situation intensified with the use of a nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile by Russia last week, which provoked strong condemnation from Ukraine’s allies, including Washington. Officials labeled this attack as a “dangerous and inexplicable escalation of this war.” Moscow claimed the missile struck an aviation repair factory in the Lviv region, asserting it was a response to what they described as Ukraine’s attempts to target one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residences—a claim that Kyiv has firmly denied.
