Russian Strikes on Odesa Kill Three, Including Child, and Cause Power Outage for Thousands

In the early hours of Monday, Russian airstrikes targeted the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa, resulting in the tragic deaths of three individuals, including a two-year-old child. The assault not only claimed lives but also left thousands without power, as emergency services rushed to the scene to assess and manage the damage.

Reports from officials and AFP correspondents on the ground described extensive destruction, including a wrecked residential building that caught fire during the bombardment. The scale of the attack has drawn widespread condemnation and sorrow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his condolences on social media, confirming that at least 16 others were injured in the strikes.

DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, reported that over 16,000 residents in the area experienced power outages due to the strikes. The assault in Odesa was part of a broader pattern of nightly drone and missile attacks orchestrated by Moscow throughout its ongoing invasion, marking one of the most violent conflicts in Europe since World War II.

Zelensky detailed that over 140 drones were launched during the nighttime attack and indicated that additional damage occurred to energy infrastructure in other regions, including Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. He emphasized the urgent need for international partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, asserting that enhancing the interception rate of both drones and missiles is critical at this juncture.

In a separate incident, a Ukrainian drone strike in the Russian city of Novorossiysk led to injuries for eight individuals, with two of those wounded being children, according to regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev. Video footage from the scene showed a residential building with significant damage, evident from charred upper floors, shattered windows, and broken balconies, underscoring the ongoing cycle of violence affecting both nations.

As the conflict persists, the human toll continues to rise, prompting calls for renewed diplomatic efforts and stronger defensive measures in response to the ever-relentless aerial assaults.
