Swedish defense contractor Saab has strengthened its position in the defense sector by acquiring full ownership of Deform AB, a specialist in metal forming based in Degerfors. This move marks a significant deepening of their long-standing collaboration and fortifies a crucial part of Saab’s supply chain.
Deform has been a reliable supplier for Saab’s naval shipbuilding division, Kockums, located in Malmö. The company has provided vital components known for their high standards of toughness and demand over the years. Established in 1907 and known as Deform since 1987, the company excels in both hot and cold forming processes across various sectors, including pressure vessels, protective solutions, heavy fabrication, and heavy equipment.
Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab Kockums, expressed confidence in the acquisition, asserting it as a beneficial solution for both Kockums and Deform. This strategic move aims to secure the supply chain and foster joint business ventures, integrating Deform as a vital component of the Saab group.
Saab emphasized that Deform’s specialized expertise and precision manufacturing play a pivotal role in enhancing its defense contracting capabilities. The acquisition is anticipated to provide long-term stability for Deform, ensuring a consistent supply of essential components to bolster Sweden’s defense industry.
Ulrika Jonsson, CEO of Deform, reassured stakeholders that the company will retain its name and continue operations in Degerfors without interruption. She highlighted the acquisition as a promising development for both the workforce and the business, reinforcing their commitment to delivering advanced, high-quality products to clients.
Currently, Deform is collaborating with Saab Kockums on the development of Blekinge-class attack submarines for the Swedish Navy, with the fleet expected to be operational by 2027. This acquisition signals a significant step forward not only for Saab and Deform but also for the broader defense capabilities of Sweden.
