Saab Secures €549 Million Contracts to Equip Germany's Eurofighter with Arexis EW System

Saab has secured two significant contracts from Airbus, totaling 549 million euros (approximately $676 million), to enhance Germany’s Eurofighter aircraft with its Arexis Electronic Warfare (EW) sensor suite. This move marks a substantial investment in the modern capabilities of the Eurofighter fleet.

The first contract, valued at around 291 million euros ($337 million), builds upon an agreement made in March 2024, which focused on integrating the Arexis system into the Eurofighter EK, also known as the Electronic Warfare variant. This integration will position the Eurofighter with enhanced electronic combat capabilities.

The second contract is also estimated at 291 million euros ($337 million) and incorporates advanced artificial intelligence technologies developed jointly by Saab and the strategic partner Helsing. This order, however, is pending approval from relevant authorities, reflecting the important regulatory oversight in military procurement.

Delivery of both contracts is anticipated between 2025 and 2028, heralding a new chapter in the operational capabilities of the German Eurofighter fleet. Saab’s President and CEO, Micael Johansson, emphasized the significance of the Arexis system, noting its position as one of the most advanced fully digital sensors and jamming systems available today. Johansson highlighted that the implementation of this system would greatly enhance the situational awareness and survivability of the Eurofighter on contemporary battlefields.

The Arexis EW suite was initially designed for the Swedish Gripen fighter, serving as a podded solution. However, it has evolved to allow full integration into aircraft, housed in a missionized pod, or deployed on unmanned platforms. The suite features cutting-edge technology, including high-power gallium nitride active electronically scanned arrays and ultra-wideband receivers. Its digital radio-frequency memory systems allow it to effectively jam “anti-stealth” radars and navigate through complex anti-access/area-denial environments.

The Arexis system will replace the existing two wingtip pods currently employed on the Eurofighter, which house the Defensive Aids Sub-System. The retrofitting process will affect 15 Eurofighter aircraft designated for the EK program, which is set to succeed the aging Tornado ECR fleet. These aircraft, along with an additional 20 newly ordered Tranche 5 Eurofighters, will be modified to align with the EK configuration, with NATO certification expected by 2030.

In addition to Saab’s Arexis suite, the Eurofighter EK will also incorporate the AGM-88E Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile, which is equipped with an active millimeter-wave radar seeker, allowing it to target ground-based air defense radars even after they cease emitting signals. This integrated approach underscores a comprehensive commitment to enhancing the operational effectiveness and tactical superiority of the Eurofighter fleet amid evolving global defense challenges.
