Saab Signs Contract for Giraffe 4A Radar System in Latin America

Saab has announced a significant development in its operations within Latin America, having signed a contract to deliver its advanced Giraffe 4A radar system and associated services to a country in the region. The deal, valued at approximately 550 million Swedish kronor (equivalent to about $58.5 million), signifies Saab’s inaugural sale of the land-based Giraffe 4A configuration in Latin America.

The Giraffe 4A radar system is a versatile mobile platform tailored for air defense, military air traffic control, and threat monitoring. One of its standout features is the ability to track multiple targets simultaneously, which enhances situational awareness for military operations.

Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Surveillance division, emphasized the importance of this contract, stating, “This milestone marks a significant step in expanding our presence in the region with advanced medium range radar.” He further noted that the Giraffe 4A will equip their customer with cutting-edge air surveillance capabilities.

This latest contract builds upon Saab’s previous successes with the Giraffe 4A system, including a notable $148.9 million order from the Swedish Armed Forces and a $48 million agreement with the US Air Force in Europe.

The Giraffe 4A was launched in 2014 and boasts impressive capabilities, including the identification of aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles, and artillery fire. Its detection range extends up to 400 kilometers (249 miles), offering extensive 360-degree coverage. The radar system is designed to refresh threat positions every second and can even update data up to eight times per second when aimed at a known threat axis, ensuring that warfighters maintain comprehensive situational awareness.

Additionally, the Giraffe 4A showcases logistical advantages, as it can be set up by just two personnel in under ten minutes and is compatible with several military airlifters, such as the C-130 Hercules, A400M Atlas, and C-17 Globemaster III. This combination of rapid deployment and advanced tracking capabilities underscores Saab’s commitment to providing cutting-edge defense technology to meet contemporary security challenges.
