South Korea awards $2.26 billion contract to L3Harris for modified Global 6500 AEW&C aircraft

South Korea has secured a significant contract with L3Harris Technologies, valued at over $2.26 billion, for the supply of modified Global 6500 aircraft intended for airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) missions. This strategic procurement aims to enhance South Korea’s capabilities in monitoring its airspace efficiently and responding rapidly to possible threats.

Designed for improved performance, the Global 6500 aircraft boast heightened operational capabilities—flying higher, farther, and faster than previous models. Equipped with advanced radar systems known for their effectiveness in real-world operations, the planes will facilitate the detection and tracking of aerial targets. Additionally, their sophisticated communications suite will enable seamless connections with U.S., NATO, and various coalition forces, bolstering South Korea’s defense infrastructure.

With the introduction of these aircraft, the Republic of Korea Air Force will expand its surveillance capabilities, complementing its existing fleet of Boeing E-7 Wedgetails. The integration of these newer platforms is anticipated to significantly enhance the country’s overall air monitoring and threat response systems.

The program involves collaboration beyond L3Harris Technologies; it includes Bombardier, the developer of the Global 6500, as well as partnerships with Israel Aerospace Industries’ ELTA subsidiary for mission-specific components. Moreover, Korean Air has been earmarked for involvement in the assembly and integration processes of these aircraft.

The consortium behind the initiative lauds it as a vital enhancement for a key American ally in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing its role in strengthening mission effectiveness. Éric Martel, the CEO and president of Bombardier, expressed confidence in the Global 6500’s capabilities, noting it as the preferred choice for nations looking to modernize their military assets amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

Korean Air’s Aerospace Division Head, Jin Kyu Lim, highlighted the firm’s commitment to support South Korea’s domestic aerospace sector through the modification, integration, and maintenance of these sophisticated airframes. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to propel local aerospace capabilities while potentially paving the way for future production endeavors.

The Global 6500 itself is a technological marvel, powered by Rolls-Royce Pearl engines that deliver a maximum speed of Mach 0.9 (approximately 1,111 km/h or 691 mph), with an operational altitude exceeding 15,500 meters (50,853 feet) and a substantial range of over 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles). The aircraft measures 30 meters (98 feet) in length, with a wingspan of 29 meters (95 feet), and has a basic operating weight of approximately 23,600 kilograms (52,029 pounds), allowing it to carry a maximum payload of 2,600 kilograms (5,732 pounds) and accommodate up to 17 passengers.

Equipped with Bombardier’s proprietary Vision flight deck, the Global 6500 features four large displays, a combined vision system, a head-up display, and advanced flight planning and navigation tools. Its capabilities also include GPS-dependent signal broadcasts, satellite communications, and adherence to performance-based navigation standards, further solidifying its role as an essential asset for modern military operations.
