Spain Contracts Navantia to Build New Combat Supply Ship for Navy

Navantia has secured a significant contract to produce a combat supply ship for the Spanish Navy, following the approval of a budget of 703 million euros (approximately $814 million) by the Spanish Council of Ministers. The new vessel, designated the BAC (Buque de Aprovisionamento) II, is set to replace the aging A-14 Patiño, which has been operational for over 30 years, by the year 2030. The BAC II will complement the Navy’s existing logistical support capabilities, working alongside the A-15 Cantabria.

The production of the BAC II is a substantial undertaking, projected to require around 3 million man-hours over a span of four years. This effort is expected to create significant employment opportunities, directly and indirectly benefiting approximately 1,800 personnel. The project emphasizes local industry involvement, with contributions from over 300 Spanish firms anticipated throughout the production process. The Ferrol shipyard in Spain will serve as the primary production site for the vessel.

The BAC II will be designed based on the successful Cantabria and the Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment-class vessels currently operated by the Royal Australian Navy. The new ship will measure 173 meters (567 feet) in length and 23 meters (75 feet) in width, with a full-load displacement expected to be around 20,000 tons. Notable features will include an environmentally friendly propulsion system, an advanced point defense system, a counter-drone system, and capabilities for maintaining, launching, and operating aerial, surface, and underwater drones.

The primary role of the BAC II will be to provide crucial logistical support for operational missions. This includes the storage and transportation of fuel, water, supplies, ammunition, and spare parts for other vessels and aircraft. Furthermore, the ship will be equipped to handle medical emergencies and special operations and could serve as an operations command ship if needed, highlighting its versatility and importance to the Spanish Navy’s operational readiness.
