Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh 2

In a notable advancement for women in the Indian Air Force (IAF), Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh has been assigned to a training establishment as an instructor for aspiring pilots on the BAE Hawk advanced jet trainer. Singh, who made history as India’s first female pilot qualified on the Rafale fighter jet, is transitioning from her operational role in a Rafale squadron to a mentorship position, reflecting the evolving roles of women in military aviation.

Her new assignment comes after successfully completing the challenging Flying Instructors Course at the prestigious Flying Instructors School in Tambaram, which is recognized as one of the most demanding programs within military aviation. This course equips instructors with the necessary skills to train new aviators, ensuring that they meet the high standards required for frontline operations.

Commissioned in 2017, Singh is part of the second batch of women fighter pilots in India. She hails from Varanasi and initially flew the MiG-21 Bison before qualifying on the Rafale in 2020. During her tenure with the Rafale squadron stationed in Ambala, she took part in high-tempo missions and international exercises, demonstrating her capability and dedication to her role. One of the standout moments in her career included being photographed alongside President Droupadi Murmu during an official sortie in a Rafale earlier this year.

As she takes up her new role on the BAE Hawk, an aircraft that plays a pivotal role in the IAF’s pilot training pipeline, Singh will be instrumental in preparing future aviators for their transition to frontline fighters, including the Rafale. This position not only highlights the IAF’s trust in her skills and commitment but also positions her as a role model for women seeking careers in the defense sector.

Moreover, her appointment serves to counter earlier misinformation regarding her status and contributions within the IAF, reinforcing her significant impact in the force. As Squadron Leader Singh embarks on this new chapter, her career continues to inspire many, showcasing the growing opportunities for women in defense and military roles in India.
