In a significant ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Subedar Sanjeev Singh Jasrotia of the 5th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, was awarded the Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu. This honor was part of the Gallantry Awards 2025, aimed at recognizing acts of extraordinary bravery, particularly during the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Subedar Jasrotia’s courage and leadership were exemplified during a high-stakes counter-terrorist operation in Baramulla district, an area noted for its sensitivity and security challenges. Amidst intense combat, Jasrotia successfully neutralized one hardcore terrorist while also inflicting injuries on two others, proving pivotal to the outcome of the mission. His actions not only safeguarded his team but also played a crucial role in bolstering regional security efforts.
The Shaurya Chakra is India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, celebrating acts of valor or self-sacrifice, particularly in situations where forces are engaged in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism. The Ministry of Defence announced the recognition of 93 armed forces personnel this year, reinforcing the bravery of individuals serving in some of the country’s most perilous regions.
Baramulla district is strategically located near the Line of Control and has historically faced persistent security threats due to ongoing militant activities. Subedar Jasrotia’s operation underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to ensuring stability in the Kashmir Valley and addressing cross-border challenges that threaten national security.
President Murmu, a steadfast supporter of the armed forces since her tenure began in 2022, oversaw the ceremony, which was attended by senior military leaders, honored soldiers, and their families. The Jammu and Kashmir Rifles has a storied history, recognized for its gallantry and service, particularly noted during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–1948 and the Kargil War. The regiment continues to play an essential role in India’s defense operations, maintaining a legacy of valor.
