Sweden Becomes First European Country to Acquire RIPSAW M3 Robotic Vehicle

Sweden has marked a significant milestone in military operations by becoming the first European nation to procure the RIPSAW M3 robotic ground vehicle from Textron Systems. This cutting-edge addition to the Swedish Armed Forces is expected to enhance operational capabilities with its advanced design and functionality.

The RIPSAW M3, part of Textron’s renowned RIPSAW series, is characterized by its rugged, modular construction. It is designed for the rapid integration of various payloads, controllers, and autonomy suites, making it versatile in handling diverse mission requirements. The vehicle is powered by a hybrid-electric powertrain, which not only augments its performance but also contributes to reduced emissions, aligning with modern sustainability efforts.

Sara Willett, Vice President of Programs at Textron Systems, commented on the operational advantages of the RIPSAW M3. “The RIPSAW M3 is ideally suited for operations in the region because of its high performance in challenging climates and terrains,” she stated, highlighting its adaptability and resilience.

Weighing in at 14,800 pounds (6,711 kilograms), the RIPSAW M3 boasts a substantial carrying capacity of up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms). This enables it to power sophisticated sensors, weaponry, and other high-tech systems with its onboard power supply of 10 kilowatts. The vehicle’s modular deck area spans 63 square feet (5.85 square meters) with a deck height of 48 inches (1.22 meters), providing ample space for mission-specific adaptations.

Designed for a wide array of missions, the uncrewed RIPSAW M3 can perform tasks ranging from reconnaissance to light combat support. With dimensions of 206 by 80 inches (5.23 by 2.03 meters), it has the capability to reach speeds exceeding 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour, making it an agile option on the battlefield.

Earlier this year, the RIPSAW M3 was selected as part of the U.S. Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) program, further solidifying its reputation in military innovation. As Sweden integrates this sophisticated robotic platform into its defense strategies, it underscores a commitment to advancing military technology and enhancing operational effectiveness in various terrains.
