Sweden Completes Upgrade of Archer Artillery Systems to Enhance Long-Range Strike Capability

Sweden has successfully completed the delivery of upgraded Archer artillery systems from BAE Systems Bofors, marking a significant enhancement in the country’s long-range strike capabilities. The Swedish defense procurement agency, FMV, confirmed that all 24 Archer 6×6 systems have been upgraded to the “Version C” standard. This upgrade includes a new command support system along with various vehicle enhancements.

With this final handover, at least two artillery battalions have achieved full operational readiness, which FMV officials have described as a crucial milestone in the ongoing modernization of the Swedish army. Jonas Lotsne, the head of FMV’s Army Materiel Division, emphasized that this program not only modernizes existing systems but also significantly boosts operational effectiveness.

The upgrade coincides with the recent debut of the new Archer 8×8 variant in Boden, where the first live rounds were fired from a platform integrated into a Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles chassis. This introduction signifies Sweden’s commitment to enhancing its artillery capabilities and overall military readiness.

The completion of the Archer upgrade is part of a broader modernization initiative that Sweden has undertaken since its alignment with NATO. The country has made a point of streamlining modernization efforts across its air, land, and maritime forces, ensuring faster procurement timelines and delivering platforms that are more interoperable with those of its allies.

Earlier in the year, Sweden’s air force received upgraded JAS 39 Gripen fighters, now equipped with advanced AESA radars and electronic warfare systems, further solidifying its air capabilities. In the naval domain, trials have begun for next-generation A26 Blekinge-class submarines, designed for enhanced stealth and extended operational endurance in the Baltic Sea. On the ground, production of the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle has expanded significantly, catering to both domestic needs and the requirements of NATO allies, including Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

These concerted efforts reflect Sweden’s strategic commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure in response to evolving security challenges.
