Sweden Donates 18 Archer Artillery Units and Counter-Battery Radars to Ukraine in New Aid Package

Sweden is escalating its military assistance to Ukraine by committing to donate 18 Archer artillery units and five Arthur counter-battery radar systems as part of its latest aid package, marked as the 18th for Kyiv. The comprehensive donation package is valued at approximately 3 billion kronor, equivalent to $296 million. The Swedish government has laid out a timeline for deliveries, with Arthur systems expected to commence shipping this year, while the Archer systems are scheduled for delivery in 2026.

This latest donation complements existing military support, as it will add additional Archer artillery units from BAE Systems Bofors to the eight units already delivered to Ukraine. The Arthur counter-battery radars, developed by Saab, will enhance Ukraine’s capabilities in detecting and targeting enemy artillery, a critical requirement given the ongoing conflict.

In addition to the hardware donations, the aid package includes financial support facilitated through a Danish-led initiative that may provide funding for 155mm ammunition or the production of Bohdana artillery. Sweden’s engagement extends beyond direct military assistance, as it plans to participate in the artillery coalition of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. This initiative is crucial for strengthening Ukraine’s artillery capabilities and ensuring interoperability with NATO forces.

Sweden’s Minister of Defence, PÃ¥l Jonson, highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “Ukraine is in urgent need of artillery and artillery ammunition. This has been a priority for Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.” This remark underscores the critical nature of artillery resources in Ukraine’s ongoing defense against Russian aggression.

Since the beginning of the war, Sweden has actively collaborated with other European and NATO allies to provide military aid to Ukraine. Just last month, Sweden announced a military assistance package worth 1.2 billion kronor, approximately $113 million, which included advanced systems like the RBS 70 NG man-portable air-defense system and Tridon Mk2 anti-aircraft artillery guns. Furthermore, Sweden has previously authorized the use of Swedish weaponry by Ukraine for strikes inside Russian territory, demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts.
