Sweden has strengthened its military logistics capabilities through a significant procurement initiative, ordering an additional 775 military trucks from leading manufacturers Scania and Volvo. This move aligns with Stockholm’s broader goals to enhance the transportation of essential goods and vehicles for its defense forces, thereby ensuring operational efficiency.
The new contract will see Scania provide a diverse fleet that includes 75 units of 6×6 box trucks, 300 units of 4×4 flatbed trucks equipped with curtain siders and tail lifts, as well as 100 units of 6×6 flatbed trucks. Meanwhile, Volvo has committed to producing its own models of 6×6 flatbed trucks, also featuring curtain siders and tail lifts, thereby ensuring a modernized and versatile logistics framework for the military.
According to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the contract includes an option for an additional 575 vehicles, which could bring the total deal to a value of approximately 1.4 billion Swedish kronor (around $130 million) if all options are executed. The expected timeline for the delivery of these vehicles is set for 2025 and 2026.
Jonas Silfver Wikstrand, the Heavy Wheeled Vehicles Section Manager at FMV, expressed a positive outlook regarding the new delivery, indicating that previous additions to the army’s fleet had been well-received by users. He highlighted the effectiveness of the collaboration between Volvo and Scania, referring to it as a key factor in the success of the military logistics enhancement initiative. “The fact that we are now adding an additional 775 modern trucks to the Armed Forces means a strong increase in capability,” he stated.
This latest order follows a successful delivery of tractor-trailers to the Swedish military earlier in January 2025, and builds on other logistics modernization efforts that have resulted in the acceptance of over 500 vehicles in 2023, with previous orders dating back to 2021 and 2022.
As Sweden bolsters its military readiness and logistical capacity, the partnership with Scania and Volvo is poised to play a crucial role in supporting the country’s defense forces, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary resources to operate effectively in various scenarios.
