Sweden has announced plans to establish a NATO logistics headquarters in the town of Enkoping, located northwest of Stockholm. This decision, confirmed by the government on Thursday, is aimed at enhancing troop movements throughout Northern Europe and bolstering the country’s security and deterrence capabilities.
Defense Minister Pal Jonson emphasized the significance of NATO’s presence in Sweden, stating that it strengthens both national defense and NATO’s northern flank. The logistics center will initially house approximately 70 personnel during peacetime; however, in scenarios of heightened alert or war, this number is expected to expand to 160.
As part of the preparations, Sweden’s armed forces have been instructed to ready the base for operations by the end of 2027. Minister Jonson elaborated on the center’s functions, which will include transporting essential supplies such as fuel, ammunition, and spare parts. He noted that the facility will play a crucial role in facilitating the movement of extensive equipment and personnel across Swedish territory.
This development follows Sweden’s notable shift from over two centuries of military non-alignment to applying for NATO membership, which was prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sweden officially became NATO’s 32nd member in March 2024, marking a significant change in the region’s security dynamics.
