Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has established a new office aimed at enhancing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within its armed forces, as reported by local state media. The initiative reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing its military capabilities amid increasing regional tensions.
The Artificial Intelligence Project Office commenced operations in early October, operating from the ministry’s headquarters. This newly formed office is tasked with consolidating various AI projects that were previously managed separately. Lt. Gen. Huang Wen-chi, who oversees the Strategic Planning Department, made this announcement during a session with lawmakers.
Huang emphasized that the creation of the office is in line with legislative directives to incorporate reliable commercial AI technologies into military operations. By centralizing these efforts, the MoND aims to streamline its approach to AI, ensuring better coordination and efficiency as it navigates the complexities of modern warfare.
