Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (AIDC) has unveiled a significant advancement in the realm of military technology with the launch of an 8-kilowatt fiber-optic laser. This innovation represents a crucial component of the island nation’s asymmetric defense strategy, aimed at addressing potential threats in the region.
The fiber laser made its debut at the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition, showcasing Taiwan’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities. The solid-state fiber laser operates at a wavelength of approximately 1.07 micrometers, which has been specifically optimized for effectiveness in humid coastal environments typical of Taiwan’s geography.
Designed with a target engagement range of 1 to 2 kilometers (0.62 to 1.24 miles), the laser system demonstrates versatility and precision. However, in the current phase of testing, engagement trials are limited to 150 meters (492 feet) for safety considerations.
This new technology is positioned as an effective tool for neutralizing aerial threats, particularly drones. It boasts a cost-effectiveness feature, with each shot estimated to incur just $1 in operational expenses.
