Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has partnered with Spanish engineering leader Indra to develop and deploy a cutting-edge 3D Air Surveillance Radar (3D-ASR) for the Indian Navy. The radar system, known as Lanza-N, was successfully installed aboard an Indian Navy warship following extensive sea trials, signaling a significant step in indigenous naval surveillance technology.

This deployment marks a historic milestone as it is the first time a next-generation naval surveillance radar has been developed and integrated within India. TASL has emerged as the first domestic company to achieve this feat, underscoring the commitment towards enhancing defense self-reliance in the country. Officials from TASL emphasized that this accomplishment features substantial localization in assembly and system integration, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in advanced defense technologies.

The Lanza-N radar has undergone rigorous testing against various aerial and naval platforms, demonstrating its proficiency in detecting a wide range of threats, including drones, supersonic fighter jets, anti-radiation missiles, and surface vessels. Its high accuracy and reliable performance have been confirmed through these tests. Additionally, the radar system has been integrated smoothly with the warship’s existing combat and surveillance infrastructure, boosting operational effectiveness.

To support ongoing production demands, TASL has set up a specialized facility for radar assembly, integration, and testing in Karnataka, which will facilitate quicker turnaround for future deliveries. This strategic move is expected to bolster India’s radar manufacturing capabilities singularly.

Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of TASL, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in fostering a robust radar manufacturing ecosystem in India. He mentioned the focus on leveraging local supply chains and technical expertise to develop advanced defense technologies that enhance India’s maritime capabilities.

Ana Buendia, Head of Indra’s Naval Business Unit, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the collaboration, noting that the establishment of a dedicated radar factory in Bengaluru is instrumental in ensuring rapid production and improved support for the Indian Navy.

The Lanza-N radar represents one of the most sophisticated long-range three-dimensional tactical surveillance systems currently available and is being deployed outside Spain for the very first time. Its induction is seen as a vital advancement in bolstering the Indian Navy’s maritime domain awareness and operational readiness, reinforcing India’s strategic position in regional and global defense landscapes.
