Tata Advanced Systems has been awarded a significant supply order by the Indian Army, focusing on the overhaul and upgradation of the first-generation Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and Battery Command Posts (BCPs). This move is intended to bolster the long-term operational readiness of a critical artillery system within the army’s arsenal.

A formal ceremony in the national capital marked the handover of the supply order to Tata Advanced Systems. Under this agreement, the company will collaborate with the Indian Army’s 510 Advance Base Workshop (ABW) to enhance in-service Pinaka systems, ensuring their sustained availability, reliability, and optimal performance on the battlefield.

Phased Overhaul Programme

The initiative will begin with a pilot overhaul of specific Pinaka MLRS and BCPs, which will be conducted jointly by Tata Advanced Systems and the 510 ABW. The results from this initial phase will guide the subsequent overhauls conducted by the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME), with Tata Advanced Systems providing essential spare parts, quality assurance, and technical expertise.

The overhaul programme is designed to harness Tata Advanced Systems’ extensive technical knowledge, access to certified components, and coordination with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This approach aims to minimize downtime and enhance the lifecycle support of the Pinaka fleet.

Indigenous Artillery Backbone

The Pinaka MLRS, developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, has become a centerpiece of India’s rocket artillery capabilities. Currently, approximately 80% of the system comprises indigenous content, which reflects the country’s commitment to self-reliance and strategic autonomy as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

A substantial number of these launchers, supplied by Tata Advanced Systems, are already operational within the Indian Army, emphasizing the company’s expanding impact in the domain of land combat systems.

Combat-Proven Capabilities

The Pinaka MLRS is designed as an all-weather indirect-fire artillery weapon, capable of delivering high-volume precision firepower against crucial targets. It is mounted on an 8×8 high-mobility vehicle, which facilitates its automated shoot-and-scoot capabilities. This affords rapid deployment while enhancing survivability and operational effectiveness across diverse and challenging terrains.

Strategic Significance

The overhaul and upgradation initiative is anticipated to extend the lifespan, improve the reliability, and maintain the combat effectiveness of the first-generation Pinaka systems, ensuring their readiness amidst evolving operational demands. This order not only highlights the Indian Army’s reliance on domestic production but also signifies Tata Advanced Systems’ integral role in India’s artillery modernization and indigenization efforts.
