A recent tragedy in Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, has cast a shadow over the dangers associated with social media challenges. In a heart-wrenching incident, a teenager lost his life and two others were critically injured when a rusted ladder collapsed from a dilapidated overhead water tank they had climbed to film a social media reel.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Kanshi Ram residential colony, also known as Kanshiram Awasiy Colony. Around 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, five teenagers—identified as Siddharth (13), Pawan (13), Golu, Shani (11), and Kallu (14)—scaled the 50- to 60-foot-tall government water tank, which had reportedly been in a state of neglect for approximately 30 years.
While descending around 6:00 pm, the twisted iron ladder, weakened by rust, gave way, resulting in a catastrophic fall for three of the teenagers. Siddharth suffered grave head injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. Pawan and Golu were rushed to Madhav Prasad Tripathi Medical College for emergency medical treatment, and thankfully, reports indicate that both are now out of danger. However, Shani and Kallu found themselves stranded on the tank’s platform with no safe route down due to the collapsed ladder.
Local residents quickly alerted the authorities, prompting urgent intervention from police and district administration personnel. Rescue operations commenced, coordinated with the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), but attempts to utilize ladders or scaffolding were thwarted by the instability of the structure. Heavy rainfall, which began at around 3:00 am on Sunday, further complicated rescue efforts.
By morning, District Magistrate Shivsharanappa GN engaged with higher officials, including the Chief Minister’s Office and the Relief Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. In response, the Indian Air Force dispatched an Mi-17 V5 helicopter from its Central Air Command. The helicopter reached the site at approximately 5:20 am and executed a rapid rescue operation. Utilizing specialized equipment, IAF personnel successfully winched Shani and Kallu to safety in a mission that lasted between nine and 15 minutes before airlifting them to an Air Force Hospital in Gorakhpur for evaluation.
The Indian Air Force later released a statement on social media, reaffirming its commitment to saving lives: “On a request from state government authorities, an IAF Mi-17 V5 of Central Air Command (CAC) was deployed to rescue two stranded children… The rescue mission demonstrates the IAF’s professionalism and swift response in times of need.”
Gaurav Srivastava, Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue), confirmed that prior complaints had been lodged by local residents regarding the hazardous condition of the water tank; however, these issues had yet to be addressed. Superintendent of Police Prashant Kumar indicated that initial investigations attribute the tragedy to the rusted ladder’s collapse, and further inquiries are underway.
This incident has sparked renewed discussions and concerns about the dangers of reckless stunts undertaken for social media attention, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and safety measures among young individuals.
