Terrorists Open Fire on Tourists in Pahalgam; At Least Five Feared Dead

In a shocking incident, a group of tourists in the picturesque Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam, located in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, fell victim to a violent attack by terrorists on Tuesday. Initial reports indicate that at least five tourists are feared dead, while more than a dozen others have suffered injuries.

The assault took place in the early hours of the day in Baisaran, a serene yet remote location that is primarily accessed on foot or via pony rides. Eyewitnesses recounted a terrifying scene as unidentified gunmen emerged from the nearby woods, opening fire indiscriminately on the unsuspecting tourists at close range.

A female survivor recounted her harrowing experience in a phone call to PTI, revealing that her husband was shot in the head and that other victims included seven additional individuals who were injured. She urgently called out for medical assistance, pleading for evacuation to a nearby hospital.

Medical authorities at the Pahalgam hospital confirmed that at least 12 injured tourists were admitted for treatment. While some individuals are reported to be in stable condition, others have sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving intensive care.

In response to the attack, security forces quickly mobilized to the area, initiating a combing operation aimed at apprehending the attackers. The region surrounding Baisaran has since been cordoned off, with additional reinforcements dispatched to ensure the safety of the area.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his shock and sorrow over the incident through a statement on social media platform X, reflecting widespread outrage and concern regarding the safety of tourists in the region. The tourism industry in Pahalgam, often referred to as the “Valley of Shepherds,” plays a crucial role in the local economy, making this attack particularly alarming for the community.

As authorities continue their investigation, further details concerning the identities of the deceased and the motives behind this tragic event remain pending. The attack has ignited calls for enhanced security measures to protect tourists and restore a sense of safety in this beloved destination.
