Thales to Modernize Royal Thai Navy's Aircraft Carrier with Integrated Platform Management System

Thales and Navantia have embarked on a significant partnership to enhance the capabilities of the Royal Thai Navy, marking a notable first collaboration in Thailand. This strategic alliance aims to modernize the Navy’s operational fleet through advanced technological upgrades.

As part of the agreement, Thales will deliver three identification friend or foe (IFF) systems. This upgrade focuses on two Pattani-class offshore patrol vessels and the HTMS Chang landing platform dock, with Navantia leading the refurbishment efforts for the Chang. The IFF systems, namely the TSA3520 interrogator and the TSC4000 transponder, are essential components designed for effective medium- and long-range target identification and surveillance. These systems will be integrated with the existing radars and combat management frameworks aboard the vessels, significantly enhancing the Navy’s ability to identify friendly and potentially hostile units while bolstering overall situational awareness.

The collaboration underscores a history of previous projects between the Royal Thai Navy and both companies. Thales has had a consistent presence in Thailand, supplying various systems, including radars, sonars, mine-hunting equipment, and fire control and command systems. Recently, the company achieved a milestone by securing a contract for an integrated platform management system tailored for the HTMS Chakri Naruebet aircraft carrier. This system aims to centralize operations related to propulsion, electrical systems, auxiliary machinery, and damage control, facilitating the modernization of the nearly 30-year-old vessel.

Earlier this year, Navantia also announced its plan to assist Thailand in upgrading the HTMS Chang. The contract specifically entails the provision and integration of vital combat management, surveillance, and fire control systems, alongside other key technologies necessary for enhancing the capabilities of the landing platform dock.

Through this partnership, both Thales and Navantia are poised to contribute significantly to the Royal Thai Navy’s modernization efforts, ensuring that it meets contemporary operational demands and challenges more effectively.
